The name heartburn often causes people to mistaken it as a problem with our heart. However, the real cause of heartburn is usually our diets. In order to prevent or cure heartburn, you should stay away from bad eating habits and food that can cause an acid reflux. Let us take a look at some foods that cause heartburn.
Fruits
Doctors and medical practitioners often recommend that we consume fruits as part of our diets. However, if you are suffering from heartburn, there are some fruits that you should avoid. Fruits with high acidity will aggravate your heartburn. Stay away from the citrus family which includes orange, lemon, grapefruit and tomatoes.
Greasy foods
Stay away from greasy foods. This places french fries and deep fried food on the hit list. Greasy foods are one of the typical causes of heartburn.
Diary food
Many people are under the misconception that milk should help them with their heartburn. While drinking some milk during heartburn, you might experience relief from your pain for a short period of time. However, the fats and proteins in the milk you drank will cause your stomach to produce more acid. Stay away from milk, milk shakes, ice cream and cream.
Beverages
Beverages are part of your diet as well. Drinking some of these beverages might cost you a day of pain. Do not consume alcohol and drinks that contain caffeine. Alcohol causes your esophageal sphincter to relax and promote acid reflux. On the other hand, beer and wine can also cause more acid to be produced by your stomach. Caffeine relaxes the esophageal sphincter as well. Drinks that contain caffeine includes red bull, coffee, coke, pepsi, root beer and seven up. It is important that you stay away from beverages that cause heartburn as well.
Sweets and desserts
This might cause some severe depression to many people. Many sweets and desserts contain ingredients that relax your esophageal sphincter. Chocolate, cookies and chips are some of the desserts and snacks that you should avoid. Serotonin which is present in chocolate acts as an anti depressant. However, it is the main cause for the relaxation of the esophageal sphincter. Stay away from chocolate as it might taste bitter to you during the next half of the day.
