Heartburn is a chronic disease that needs prompt medical attention. It usually occurs in adults after eating their meals and before their bedtime. However, even infants and children can acquire this disease. What makes it more difficult is that, children cannot express how heartburn affects their body. In addition, heartburn in children is hard to identify because it may come as a regular stomachache in their higher belly.
According to surveys, about two percent of the children around the world are suffering from heartburn and most of them are not aware of it. In fact, more and more children are getting this type of disease when they step the age of 3-9.
Causes of Heartburn in Children
Heartburn in children is usually caused by gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). This is a condition wherein the stomach produces acids that are also detrimental to the esophagus. Heartburn is also the result of the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This type of muscle is located at the bottom of the esophagus, which keeps the acid in the stomach. When the LES relaxes too much, the acid produced by the stomach would be uncontrollable, thus resulting to heartburn.
However, heartburn in children can also be the result of unhealthy lifestyle. Children are more prone to heartburn if they do not eat nutritious foods. Giving your child with chocolates and candies can lead to heartburn and other health complications. These foods are known to cause heartburn especially with the quantity of acid and fats they contain.
